Greetings from the Consul General of the Republic of Cuba in Toronto, Tania López Larroque, on the occasion of the book launch at A Different Booklist bookstore, Toronto, October 13, 2017

Good evening,

It is a pleasure to join you tonight for the launch of this book, that contributes to a better understanding of nowadays difficult scenarios. Arnold August, journalist, writer and researcher, combines all of them in this work and approaches different angles of one reality.

On behalf of the Cuban Consulate in Toronto, I would like to thank Arnold for his tireless support to the Cuban Revolution, and particularly this time, for the altruistic initiative of donating all proceeds from the Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto presentations to the victims of Hurricane Irma.

As you may know, this meteorological event strongly hit our country, with the aftermath of great damages in housing, agriculture and the electro-energetic system, in addition to the painful loss of 10 human lives. At this moment, the Cuban people is already moving forward to the reconstruction, encouraged by our spirit of resistance and supported by numerous expressions of solidarity such as this one.

However, the US blockade is a more destructive weapon that has damaged our people for more than 55 years. In a few days, Cuba will submit to the United Nations a new report on the persistence and strengthening of the blockade against Cuba and we are confident that, one more time the international community will condemn this genocide.

Once again, I would like to thank the author, awarded the Medal of Friendship by the Cuban Institute of Friendships with the Peoples, for his commitment to spread Cuba’s realities.

Es un placer unirme a ustedes esta noche para el lanzamiento de este libro que contribuye a una mejor comprensión de los difíciles escenarios de la actualidad. Arnold August, periodista, escritor e investigador, combina todos ellos en este trabajo y analiza los diferentes ángulos de la realidad desde diferentes enfoques.

En nombre del Consulado de Cuba en Toronto, agradezco a Arnold por su incansable apoyo a la Revolución Cubana y, en esta ocasión, en particular a su iniciativa altruista de donar todos los ingresos provenientes de las ventas del lanzamiento de su libro en Ottawa, Montreal y Toronto a las víctimas del huracán Irma.

Como ustedes quizás ya lo saben, este fenómeno meteorológico golpeó fuertemente a nuestro país, causando grandes daños en las viviendas, en la agricultura y en el sistema electro-energético, además de la dolorosa pérdida de 10 vidas humanas. En este momento, el pueblo cubano ya está avanzando hacia la reconstrucción, alentados por nuestro espíritu de resistencia y apoyados por numerosas expresiones de solidaridad como lo es esta.

El bloqueo estadounidense es, sin embargo, un arma más destructiva que ha perjudicado a nuestro pueblo durante más de 55 años. En pocos días, Cuba presentará ante las Naciones Unidas un nuevo informe acerca del persistente y endurecido bloqueo contra Cuba. Estamos seguros que, una vez más, la comunidad internacional condenará este genocidio.

Deseo agradecer nuevamente al autor, premiado con la Medalla de la Amistad por el Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos, por su compromiso para la difusión de la realidad cubana.
